Viking VXD Pre-action Deluge Systems

Introduction

The Viking group has a long history in the fire safety industry that spans over a century. Viking is well known for creating internationally-recognized sprinkler and deluge system products. Unlike typical sprinkler systems, deluge systems allow rapid fire suppression with simultaneous discharge from open nozzles or sprinkler heads. This system provides an immediate, full-area ‘deluge’ of suppressant. This system is critical in environments where fires can escalate and spread incredibly fast due to nearby flammable materials. Viking’s VXD product line adds to their long list of deluge and pre-action valves, including different options and specifications fit for any application.

What Is a Deluge Sprinkler System?

A deluge sprinkler system is one that releases the suppression agent after fire alarm devices have been triggered. Rather than being triggered separately, in a deluge system, all sprinklers or releasing devices are triggered at once. The deluge valve is normally closed, and must be opened to release fire suppressing agents. To this end, deluge systems can be activated in a variety of ways, including hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, or manual release.

Where Are Deluge Sprinkler Systems Used?

Deluge systems are typically deployed in areas of extreme fire hazard. For instance, airport fuel farms, chemical processing plants, oil & gas facilities, warehouses storing flammable materials, and power generation plants are all common areas that may require deluge systems. Ideally, the deluge valve delivers simultaneous suppressing agent delivery, which quickly overwhelms the fire with a large volume of foam, water, or clean agents.

Deluge systems also serve the important purpose of preventing unnecessary water damage in sensitive areas. To start, the two-step activation process of a pre-action system with a deluge valve can prevent false alarm discharges of the suppressant. In a two-step process, a separate fire detection system must first activate, filling the pipes with water. However, for pre-action systems, the water will not be discharged until there is a sprinkler head activation through a heat-sensitive glass bulb or fusible link on the sprinkler head itself. As an additional benefit, pre-action systems are dry, so they have no risk of water freezing and damaging the pipes in cold environments. In a dry system, you also have less risk of corrosion or ice buildup that could vastly increase maintenance and repair costs.

The Viking VXD Deluge System

The Viking VXD deluge valve itself is a mechanical device that holds back the water until the pressure in its priming chamber is intentionally relieved by an external detection and release system. More specifically, it is a double interlock pre-action system that provides the highest level of protection against accidental discharge.

In this system, the pre-action (deluge) valve is not immediately opened after the fire detection system has been triggered. Instead, a supervisory device monitoring the air pressure in the piping will open the pre-action valve. Once the air pressure drops due to an activated sprinkler head, water will fill the pipes and the sprinkler will finally discharge water. This system is especially useful in frozen warehouse storage facilities, where a pipe break can lead to significant ice buildup.

Viking also offers pre-trimmed and loose trim riser assemblies for the model VXD deluge systems. The Viking 23545-1 includes an electric release solenoid that can be triggered with electricity to activate the system. Meanwhile, the riser package comes pre-assembled and tested at Viking’s factory to ensure that it operates properly upon arrival. This allows for easy installation without having to cut pipes, source materials, assemble parts, and test for leakages yourself. Most importantly, the riser assembly is designed to meet NFPA 13 standards. The Viking VXD riser assembly arrives on site as a single, compact, and integrated unit that can be fit directly onto your riser manifold.

Conclusion

Discover how the Viking VXD Pre-action Deluge System provides advanced fire protection for high-risk environments like chemical plants, fuel farms, and cold storage warehouses.
