Federal projects may already be required to follow the 2025 edition, since federal agencies typically apply the most recently published NFPA standard when contracting for design services. State and local jurisdictions are adopting on their own timelines, generally somewhere between one and three years out. California moved early. The California Department of Housing and Community Development confirms the 2025 California Building Standards Code, which incorporates NFPA 72 2025, becomes effective January 1st, 2026.
