Introduction

Viking has been a trusted name in the fire protection space for almost 100 years. Today, Viking Plastics is working together with BlazeMaster to deliver new Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) sprinkler pipes and fittings. In addition, Viking is also releasing CPVC components for aspirating smoke detection (ASD) systems. Produced at an ISO 9001 facility, they ensure the highest quality CPVC piping that meets the strict requirements defined by the NFPA 72, chapter 17. The Firealarm.com shop now features Viking CPVC pipes, solvent, crosses, bends, joints, and more that are all plenum rated and UL certified.

What Is the Advantage of a CPVC Pipe?

CPVC offers numerous benefits when deployed for an ASD system. CPVC piping is lightweight, strong, non-toxic, heat resistant, pressure resistant, and corrosion resistant. Most importantly, it is easy to install. Thus, it vastly reduces time and value costs that are typically associated with using similar types of piping. Firstly, CPVC piping has lower labor costs than other types of piping systems. It is very easy to cut and size to your specific needs. Additionally, less manpower and machinery is needed to install the CPVC piping, and there is less training required to install the system. This is thanks to the solvent cement that is used to join the different pipes and fittings in the system. As a result, you have a strong and permanent bond between fittings that is molecularly fused within minutes.

Since CPVC doesn’t require hot work, you can enjoy a safer and more seamless work environment. You can expect faster transportation and installation of your system without the need for tons of equipment and materials. Moreover, CPVC has many unique properties that make it perfect for your facility. For example, it is very easy to paint, and chemically inert. Hence, the corrosion resistance of CPVC means your system requires less upkeep and repair while remaining in service. Finally, let’s not forget that CPVC has minimal impact on the environment, and it can be recycled and later repurposed for different applications.

Viking Plastics CPVC Specifications

So what exactly is CPVC? Essentially, CPVC is a type of PVC homopolymer that has undergone a chlorination process. As a result, CPVC has approximately 15% more chlorine atoms bonded to its Carbon molecules than typical PVC does. Subsequently, the additional chlorine gives CPVC more temperature and pressure resistance than PVC. As more chlorine molecules are added, the material transitions to a softer, more rubbery surface, which also protects its structural integrity against heat. CPVC can then be infused with additives that gives it additional strength and flexibility. As a result of these properties, CPVC can withstand prolonged exposure to chlorinated and contaminated water flows, making it useful in wastewater facilities, mineral processing, plumbing, suppression, and many other commercial applications. For instance, the V5012SBI features a sprinkler head adapter that enables easy installation without the use of thread tape or sealant.

Different CPVC components can be connected with the use of a solvent cement. Solvent cement solutions are easy to apply and the solution sets within minutes. Make sure to follow the applicable codes and requirements, and have a qualified installer whenever using the solvent cement to install CPVC components.
