Preventing Vandalism of Fire Safety Equipment

News

7 May 2025

Damage stoppers protect vital components of your fire alarm system from damage. Also, people may tamper with notification appliances, detectors, manual stations, and with wiring wherever your system is exposed to the public. Choosing the right damage stopper will keep your system protected for when you need it most.

Maintenance
Make sure you verify that your damage stoppers are securely mounted and that all screws or fasteners are tight. For covers with an audible alarm, periodically test the alarm functon as recommended by the manufacturer.

IP Rating
IP and NEMA ratings indicate the device’s resistance to dust and water. Higher IP ratings mean the device is more resistant to external conditions.

Material
Polycarbonate is a popular choice, especially for manual stations for its high impact resistance. To add, ABS plastic can be a more cost-effective options that offers good impact resistance and rigidity for indoor applications. For high security or heavy-duty applications, metal or steel guards may be used for maximum protection against vandalism.

Coating
Detector wire guards are often made with steel and given a protective coating to prevent corrosion. Some of these coatings may include oven-baked enamel, polyester, chrome, vinyl, and zinc. In some cases, the entire wire guard may be constructed from stainless steel.
