The Purpose of Strobes Within a Fire Alarm System

What Is a Notification Appliance?
Notification appliances are important devices that warn occupants about an emergency, and provide instructions to evacuate or reach safety. These devices are life-saving due to their ability to get occupants out quickly, and in an orderly manner.

Two-wire
Two-wire devices utilize the same wires for both their operating power and to transmit alarm signals to the fire alarm control panel. Ensure that your device is used on a compatible circuit.

Four-wire
Four-wire devices have two wires dedicated solely to provide operating power to the device, and a separate pair of wires used for the alarm signal.

Light Output
The light output of a notification strobe determines the brightness of a device in a particular direction, measured by candela (cd).

LED Bulbs
Notification strobes can be LED or Xenon. LED strobes are more power efficient, using an average of 40% less current draw than their xenon counterparts. LED lights are popular among newer strobe models.

Xenon Bulbs
The distinguishing characteristic of xenon, or high-density discharge, lights lies in their light-generation process. Unlike traditional bulbs, they don’t utilize a metal filament. Instead, these lights contain xenon gas, which, upon ignition, emits a bright light.

Audible Signals
Audible horns and speakers have loudness ratings, measured in decibels (dB). Ensure that any public mode devices are at least 15 dB above your building’s ambient sound levels for effective audible signals.
